Glossary

Every subject has its own vocabulary. Here are some abbreviations in common use in British education which we use on this site.

AR Art and design

Core subjects English, maths and science. Together these take up about half the timetable.

DfES Department for Education and Skills. Equivalent to many countries' Ministry of Education.

Differentiation Teaching according to the age, ability and aptitude of individual children.

DT Design and technology

EAL English as an Additional Language

EBD Emotional and behavioural difficulties

EN English

Foundation Stage The curriculum for children aged 3, 4 and 5.

GG Geography

HI History

HMI Her Majesty's Inspectorate

ICT Information and communication technology

Inclusion Meeting the needs of every child.

Key Stage 1 (KS1) 5-7 years old

LEA Local Education Authority

Literacy Hour An hour every day in school learning to read and write, broken down into various activities.

MA Maths

MFL Modern foreign languages

Mixed ability A teaching group in which pupils of all abilities are taught together.

MLD Moderate learning difficulties

MU Music

National Curriculum The National Curriculum provides a balanced education covering 11 subjects.

National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) A British government initiative which aims to raise standards of numeracy for all children in infant, primary and junior schools. It tries to involve parents as much as possible.

Ofsted Office for Standards in Education an official body which regularly inspects all the schools in England which state funded. Ofsted inspectors produce education reports which are meant to improve standards of achievement and quality of education, provide public reporting and informed independent advice.

PE Physical Education

Performance Tables The Department for Education and Skills publishes comparative secondary and 16-18 performance tables each year showing differences between schools. Primary school performance tables are published by local education authorities and report the achievements of pupils at the end of Key Stage 2.

PGCE Post-Graduate Certificate of Education. A teaching qualification.

PSE (PSHE) Personal and Social / Personal, Social and Health Education - includes issues such as sex education.

Public School Actually a private school. It's only 'Public' inasmuch as it's open to the public - if they can pay!

QCA Qualifications and Curriculum Authority

QTS Qualified Teacher Status You can't teach in Britain without it.

SATS Statutory Assessment Tests at the end of KS1, 2 and 3. Do not confuse with American SATS which, apart from having the same four letters in the same order, are completely different.

SC Science

SEN Special Educational Needs: Learning difficulties for which a child needs special education help. May include children with physical disabilities or emotional and behavioural disorders.

SENCO Special Educational Needs Coordinator

Statement of Special Educational Needs Describes any learning difficulties which a pupil has, and specifies the extra help or equipment they need. Around 3% of school pupils nationally have statements. Reviewed every year, and has legal force: the school must provide whatever is written on the statement, it is not optional.

State Schools Otherwise known as publicly funded schools, and attended by over 90% of pupils. Parents do not pay any fees.
